about

This song, called "I Didn't Know," is an upbeat but sad song about loving a closeted man, and the complicated feelings that come with being somebody's secret. It's a song about the innocence, naivete, and blissful fantasy of teen love, but also about the disillusionment of realizing that your lover is ashamed of loving you.

I came up with the main melody for this song a long time ago, and for over a year, it lived solely as a voice recording on my phone. I tried writing so many different lyrics to this melody, but nothing stuck until one day I started thinking about someone I loved when I was younger.

lyrics

VERSE 1:
I could still remember how you used to taste
Like cherries and vanilla with a hint of date
And perhaps I should’ve noticed how you pulled away
But there’s nothing quite as sweet as this

This dream is painted with some shades of pink and blue
When I try to recreate, it doesn’t look like you
So I’m not so sure there’s anything that I could do
When you fade, I feel a trace of a kiss

CHORUS:
I didn’t know that you left
Or even that we’re through
I didn’t know that I meant
So little to you
After everything’s destroyed
You don’t get to call me your boy
‘Cause I didn’t know I meant
So little to you

VERSE 2:
I can still remember how we sneaked around
Playin’ hide and seek and hoping never to be found
And our whispers always made prettiest of sounds
There was always more of you to adore

I thought I was more to you than just some fun
Or at least I’m worth enough for you to say we were done
But I guess she came around and made you fall love
And there’s no place for me anymore

CHORUS

BRIDGE:
I thought I was the one
At least that’s what you’ve said for months
Cut me off when summer’s done
‘Cause I guess you’ve had your fun

I would be fine without a lover
But babe, I didn’t think I’d lose a friend
But it had to end

CHORUS

OUTRO:
After all is said and done
You don’t get to say that it was fun
‘Cause I didn’t know I meant
So little to you
